Minutes, May 29, 2007 Weekly meeting Taken by MJ Meeting starts: 2:00 Mitutoyo DO: -Making progress but not working yet. -Process of calibration is different. -Not in correct place, but no reason (presumably) that it can't be moved there. -Might have to recalibrate in epics (outer limit switch has moved - new reference point). -Recalibrating will be a major undertaking (via sighting?), but may need to be done before energy measurements can be made. CR: -Needs to be properly calibrated before used to measure energies (for alpha testing as well). DO: -Unit is not absolute, so we need an absolute reference point and need to disable the zeroing function. Also the new Mitutoyo requires a mounting system which the old ones did not. Shipment to Seattle DO: -Packaged -Can't find address - CR will reprint address. -Radiation safety wants to re-survey pump and valve (since they found 1220 counts/s on cryo previously, mix of several elements - some long lived) PM: -The radiation is 'loose' but sticky -wash, replace ring, seal (clamped lid) DH: -What are the regulations on shipping contaminated material? - needs looking into DSSSD electronics CR: -took two days to re-cable -hopefully it will take less time now that everything is labeled -maybe add the diagram to the operator notes on the web (by AG or MJ?) TOTAL station MJ: -Things look good -some errors in calculations (now fixed by DH) -some inconsistencies (DH has measured by hand and corrected) -A few changes, most make sense but some are harder to explain -Data passes most logical first-tests -Accurate and precise to the level we need DH: -Not actually very many changes -No angles changed -Some lengths extended to match reality (some adjustments may still be necessary) -Most changes typically around 5mm -MJ will write up a report -Notes on the data -Some along axis shift may be necessary -Q4 looks rolled -The optic axis seems to run downhill approx. 4mm over sep. length? -Perhaps simulations may need adjusting to include differing lengths? Alpha tests CR: -Detector is set up and calibrated -Ready to adjust the mysql to reset the gains -Waiting on slits (Mitutoyo) before starting (slits are open for tests, but don't want to interrupt the test) Back to Mitutoyo DO: -Can rush it -Need help from someone who knows epics (for re-zeroing) -This time tomorrow should be working Alpha tests cont' CR: -Using the same limits Jonty used to verify his (and CR's) results -Then start adjusting/testing the second stage to see how things can be optimized -Would like some optics calculations so it's not just blind guessing SIMION CR: -Chris has 'finished' program in raytrace to map the MD fields (slices) -You can only use one coordinate system to import into SIMION, so the fringe fields do not lie along axes, so the step sizes are skewed transversing the fringing fields -Need a small step size -1/3 of magnet gap for differential step is recommended and seems to work best -Using that step size, things seem workable AG: -For importing into SIMION you need to write some code that SIMION reads -It's unclear about whether the code or SIMION does the interpolating -It is a nontrivial task that will probably take a while Solar cells CR: -Cables half the length of the longest sections, with ribbon connectors to provide a possible extension -This avoids bunching in vacuum -Need to think about feed-through -Final design should be ready soon to have things made Mylar windows -Check with Christof Other: DH: -Request brief after-meeting meeting about vibrating wire, in hope of being ready to go for July DO: -4:00 meeting to sort out Mitutoyo -Count steps as a means of zeroing -Redefine zero using steps in epics Meeting ends 2:45
