Minutes of the DRAGON group meeting of March 26, 2008 held at 9:30am in the High Energy Counting Room of ISAC-1 ------------------------------------------------------------ (Note: the regular Tuesday meeting was postponed because of conflict with presentations to the Special EEC meeting.) Present: CR, DH (recorder), CV, UH, LE, DO, PM 1. Vacuum at the End Station -the large electrostatic mirror assembly was mounted in the Final slit box. Over the Easter weekend the vacuum got no better than the mid-to-low 10^-6 Torr range (CV). No leak was present according to the He leak detector (DO/DH). -the mirror and actuator were removed and its port blanked off. After 3 hours IG52 had broken below 1E-6 Torr and after 18 hours had reached 3.8E-7 Torr. -the changes were: removal of the actuator bellows (but a leak here should have shown up in the leak test?); removal of the mirror, which has G10 parts. Literature says G10 takes a long time to outgas, so this is the most likely culprit. -Machine Shop has trouble making the Ion Chamber Pickup Flange from Al, will begin to make it from st.steel within 1-2 days (CV) 2. Actuator for the large MCP/mirror/foil -if we use an available air cylinder, it will need a short spacer in order to get the mirror assembly far enough up in the Out position. DO is concerned that because air is a compressible fluid, any tendency to stick will lead to Stick-and-Jump motion with destruction of the thin foil. -the motor drive from the previous Foil actuator is available, but would need a bare shaft to be docked and an adapter welded on its end. Priorities: #1 implement the motor drive as MCP actuator (DO/PM/CV) #2 have Controls fix EPICS interlocks, displays (CR) #3a re-mount mirror and observe pump-down for up to 1 week #3b attach 'tree', including new turbo, to IV61 port (DO) #4 assemble and mount multi-mesh beam attenuator (DO/CR) 3. DAQ -priority is to have electronics for Ion Chamber and MCP's set up in time for May test beam. Need to recover 5 switchable delays for the IC -this week can generate test signals to compare the New Analyzer vs the previous analyzer or vs Nova (LE/CV) -need to do a demo of BGO gain calibration when the missing library for HV script is provided (LE/CV to contact Konstantin O.) -for 23Mg beam need the beta monitors and Ge mounted and connected to electronics. DH will check connections to "Operations" EPICS scalers. 4. MCP foils - CV and LE spent 3 hours yesterday trying to pick up large, thin foils. Release from the slide onto water is not a problem, but pickup onto a mesh is tricky. More practice is needed. 5. Supernanogan -CR has warned W-P Liu and Anuj Parikh of the possibility that Supernanogan will not have been commissioned by the time it is supposed to deliver a 33S beam to us in August. The run will be shown on the schedule and pressure kept on to get it commissioned in time. 6. 22Na(p,g) experiment -Anne S. has tried cleaning the target ladder that held the 22Na targets shipped from TRIUMF to Seattle, but activity remains. They will make a new ladder and send it to TRIUMF, rather than deal with issues of shipping an active ladder. -date of run with 22Na target has not yet been set.
