DRAGON Meeting Minutes 10th July 2007 Present: CV,MT,CR(rec),AG,PM,MJ,LB,UG,CD,DH,DO 1. Hardware Loveland's group have nine of our preamps and some preamp power supply cables. They also have our elastic monitor power supply. The DSSD power supply is still in the TUDA shack. 2. Quad alignment studies DH & MJ eliminated permanent field in steerer. Now the DH method of finding the zero point of the field with fixed ends of wire seems to work. Now MJ thinks he has a method to find the pitch and roll of the field. Q4 is 3/10mm up, and looks down 1mrad downstream. Need to take into account the wire sag under gravity to do this. Approximate with parabola. Try and look at tilted Q4 in raytrace. 3. Report on EMIS. Most beam development seemed to involve gas catchers for fragmentation facilities, charge breeders etc. Lots of mention of UC targets. Some mention of resonant laser ionization. Facilities talked about: GSI-FAIR,MSU-> Fragmentation+gas catcher+acceleration, SPIRAL-2, ANL->Californium source, neutron rich beams to populate 'gaps' in UC production. One poster highlighted attempts to calculate release in ISOL targets-> Aluminium from SiC at ORNL. 5um grains, diffusion limited with ~100s characteristic timescale. Fits with what we see online with 26Al. 4. Beam development. EEC-> Eurisol proposal. Pierre wants to get overseas target technology here. He has approval to test oxide targets. The proposal involves a multi-target source modified to fit in our target configuration., with the FEBIAD source. This will enable us to look for 18,19Ne beams. We will be reviving the 19Ne and 23Mg proposals at the next EEC. 23Mg was not originally assigned priority. Could do this with dE-E. Yields saw A=23 at 500pA during tests-> substantial 23Na contamination. With 2x10^6 23Mg this is 1/1000 ratio. Mg very good candidate for TRILIS. Can we suppress surface ionization? What about using TRILIS kicking signal to remove background. At 500keV/u to 700keV/u can use the ion chamber. A few 100Hz leakies are ok. Resonance strengths: 27meV and 129meV. However one 23Na(p,g) resonance directly exactly on higher one-> 640meV -> 10,000cts/day! Need 2x10^7 23Mg. We will ask for 2 days development time in next appropriate target test to look at 23Na/23Mg contamination with Dragon and optimizing the mass separator, feeding beta monitor and elastic signals to operators. Speak to Pierre about this. Beam requests due 20th July. Ask for September Mg/Na tests for the ion chamber. 5. Dragon Video We will be filming some footage of people working on Dragon tomorrow. This will be included in the new astrophysics animation that is being made for the Director. 6. AOB 40Ca - Barry had comments on the use of Rutherford scattering for normalization. However we still believe this to be ok as the alpha widths are small.
