Dragon meeting minutes January 17, 2006. Convened: 14:00 Attending: CV, MT, CR, CD, JC(recorder), DH, PM, GR, AH, DFOT, JP Annual report with open slots distributed by DH for additions from others. Would like to have contributions included by end of January. Hardware: Roots blower update: Fan motor wires overheated. Fan motor is broken, replacement will cost ~ CDN$900. Vacuum operation of roots blower appears unaffected. Cause of overheating was apparent improper installation of wires by electricians (280V as opposed to spec'd 230V). Should check to see if other blower fans are (mis)wired in the same way Alpha acceptance: (AH) DSSSD is installed just upstream of Q1. Two strips at ends are not working. Waiting for vacuum pumps to be turned on so that testing can commence with acceptable (1.0E-5Torr) vacuum. DH indicated a ~2% energy spread FWHM, as measured by a single strip. DFOT: End pumping tube is 36mm DIA, detector located ~ 2cm downstream of that, thus hit pattern should reflect that. 40Ca(alpha,gamma) update: CV Run stats: 51 energy changes, 16 days of beam time. Presents alpha capture excitation function from E(40Ca)~850 to 1150 keV/u (see attached figure) Also presented is plot of energy calc from MD1 vs energy calc from Prague, and the data suggests a consistently high offset of ~ 5 keV/ u, i.e. MD1 higher than Prague (see attached figure). Also, the measurement in MD1 depends on the charge state (14+ vs 13+ yields a difference of ~ 3keV/u). Timing data also presented (RF-SB timing vs beam energy), which shows scatter. In future, would like to extend data down another ~200 keV/u, and would like to return to anomalously large strength points, e.g. ~980 keV/u. As a result, will request two weeks of beamtime to complete these experiments. Beam requests for the upcoming year: - 2 weeks of 40Ca - 3-4 days of stable Ti for charge state distributions DH gives update on FEBIAD: plan is to try TiC target in March for 19Ne. - UGreife will submit request for 19Ne - AChen will submit request for 25Al - ~ 5 days of 20Ne to (finally?) clear up 20Ne(p,g)... - Oxygen-17 beam request is dependent on which source we want to use and when the ECR will be installed (late summer or late fall) - 26Al request from Yale reduced number of shifts to ~8. Not really clear when SiC target may be installed... - Jim King and 13N? DH: renewal of DRAGON operation grant for following three years will be requested in the fall, and it is important to think of future projects for inclusion into that document. Summer student projects: - DH submitted a request for subsidy for 1 student (it was granted). Potential projects are acceptance, various experiments... Other business: Fire safety inspection in February, so prelude to this by local firemen this coming Friday (Jan 20th). DH wants to use this as an excuse to clean up the DRAGON area. DFOT emphasizes the importance of gaining the approval of the Canadian NRC in the cleanup. Adjourned: 14:53
