DRAGON Minutes 3 February 2004 Present: DO, GR, LB, PM, AO, ML, DG, JS, JD Recorder: CJ -The minutes are no longer being circulated to the world. Facilities: -DO: The new pump and the four-line were installed, but they are not in EPICs yet. The plan is to start with 12C + 12C. +Because we have large pumping tubes, we cannot run with hydrogen at full pressure. +All necessary hardware is on the system. +It will be ready for experimentation in a few weeks. -TUDA still has our pump. -DO: We need money for ten valves. We need budget approval to buy them. -The ion chamber works, however for the sake of convenience, it would be nice to add the valves. -ML is conditioning ED2. It is presently at about 142 V. -The new people will need to learn to tune in a training session during the last week of February. -To help Jonty become more familiar with the data acquisition system, he is going to add the MCP to it. -JD suggested that Jonty create a list of PAW spectra, and ask which spectra should be kept, and which should be discarded. -We need to determine what additional hardware we need for the DRAGON’s backend (MCP, PGAC, IC). -After finishing his thesis, ML is going to work on getting the PGAC running this summer. Since it did not work when Don Hunter was here, If Mike cannot get the PGAC to work properly, we may need to redesign it. +One problem is that we have been using an un-gridded window. +We definitely need a effective means of obtaining two timing signals (MCP and PGAC). -ML needs to do runs to test the MCP and IC with stable beam. He will provide a detailed run plan next week. -AO has a Si detector from Catania that contains 5 pads in a line for position detection. He wants to run with beam to test the Z-selection abilities of the Catania detector, and determine if we want to purchase one with more pads. Art has tested the 5-pad detector with alpha particles. +We need to test the Catania detector on heavy ions. +AO would like to use a (p,g) reaction (ideally with neon beam), since the Z-difference is one. +JD recommended that we perform an attenuated beam test on the Si detector, and he does not want to create a new mount for it. +AO would like to try cooling the Catania detector if it easily feasible. +The Catania detector test runs will happen after Mike L’s test runs. 12C(a,g): -JD: We need a major calculation and a “meeting of the minds” regarding the acceptance of the DRAGON for 12C(a,g). -If possible, JD would like to do the other planned experiments (19Ne, 13N and 26Al) before modifying the DRAGON for the 12C(a,g) experiment. ECR: -JD: They saw unaccelerated 26Al in its ground state at 8Pi. The intensity was about 1.2*10^9. They collected about 10^13. -CR needs a minimum of 10^9 ions/s of 26Al beam. He needs to run for a week. +CR: We can look at the stronger resonances first. -Paul Schmor is allowing injection of 11CO into the ECR to for testing purposes. 11CO has a 20 minute half life. -There are strong movements towards putting an ECR in ISOL. -At the end of next week, some people are going to Lake Louise to give talks. Next week they are going to practice them on Tuesday or Wednesday.
