Minutes of DRAGON Group meeting, 6 August, 2002 Present: L.Buchmann, J. D'Auria, M. Chatterjee, J.Fallis, D. Gigliotti, D. Hutcheon, C. Jewett, A. Laird (recorder), M. Lamey, J. Rogers, C. Wrede 1. Minutes of the previous meeting adopted with the following revisions: - in those listed present Suzzi Lapi should be Suzi Lapi - under the second bullet point, it should read Cary Davids - under the fourth bullet point, add that the eurocrate was powered down Business Arising 2. JDA reported that the DSSSD had been destroyed. DRAGON was running with attenuated beam and the voltmeter was being watched. However, the Eurocrate had been unplugged and so there was no reading. Attenuated not full beam was on the detector for several minutes. The DSSSD then exhibited high leakage currents. 3. JDA agreed to order 2 new detectors. 4. JDA has contacted Cary Davids about material for the IC from Argonne and is waiting for a reply. Up coming run 5. CJ reported that 21Ne is preferable to 20Ne due to the presence of more resonances and that it was suggested that we start with the 510.2 kev/u resonance. 6. DAH reported that currently the trigger signal from the IC is taken from anode 1 and asked if there was any reason to change this. CJ reported that AC had wanted to use anode 3 to avoid triggering on 'trash'. LB stated that the expected rates are low enough for this not to be a problem and we should record everything. DAH inquired what the chance of anode 1 missing real events is? 7. JR suggested checking the DA for the IC by using an alpha source. DAH suggested pulsing the grid. JR warned that the discriminator levels should be checked so we are not missing events. 8. DAH suggested the need for a training course on filling the IC. 9. JF reported that the MCP shows good position information but the timing is questionable. 10. DAH reported that NOVA can be used to look at the MCP data, the DSSSD should be removed from NOVA and the IC inserted. 11. LB suggested mounting the alpha source on the back of FCF. 12. JDA reported that EPICS is not up to date on the hardware side. 13. JDA reported that the thick windows are currently on the IC and we should work out procedures before replacing them with thin windows. 14. JDA suggested adding the 730 kev resonance to the list since it is broad and all those currently on the list are narrow. 15. DAH reported that George Mackenzie was interested in Prague magnet calibrations. JR added that we should use this run to check the calibration of the elastic monitor since we need to recover the ability to measure beam energy and width from the elastic data. DAH suggested that we focus on the IC. 16. JDA reported a problem with the cryo pumps. ED2 is now ok\ and ED1 should be ready in a few hours. 17. JDA reported that the dry pumps exhibit a low grinding noise. This is not critical and there are backups. 18. DAH reported that RP should be turned off when not in use. 19. DAH reported that there is a drip from quads 3 and 5 and it is not critical. 20. DAH reported that the plexiglass shields had been removed from Q1 and Q2 and that this was not safe practice. Miscellaneous 21. JDA reported that a fume hood was being added at TR13 for Suzi's work. 22. DAH reported on discussions with David Jenkins on the intention together with Brian Fulton to measure 12C+12C with DRAGON. DG has undertaken some simulations on this using GEANT. There was interest expressed in this measurement. 23. CW reported on the status of the SSD's - 3 fried, 2 broken wires and one single sided ok. 24. CW reported on new design for SSD holder including cooling. The leakage current dropped by an order of magnitude with cooling but the resolution was not improved. 25. CW stressed that the SSD have extremely fragile wires and great care should be taken in handling them. JR added that gloves should be worn. 26. DG reported that the trays for moving the BGO array run extremely smoothly and any resistance indicates a problem.
