Proper tuning of the DRAGON optics requires precise knowledge of the magnetic fields of the magnets located in the electromagnetic separator. These fields, in turn, are dependant on the electric current provided to them by the power supplies. Following the installation of the new dipole power supplies in February 2003, it was necessary to revise the relationship between the magnetic field and the electric current to account for the change in hardware.
Magnetic field data was taken for MD1, MD2, Q9, and Q10 over a range of setpoint currents. The data was then fit to a quadratic curve, and relationships were found for the field as a function of setpoint current, and current as a function of magnetic field. The error between the measured values and the fits were on the order of a hundredth of a percent, giving confidence in the derived relationships.
